Where required knowledge based engineering (KBE) techniques represent a merging of object-oriented programming, artificial intelligence, and computer aided design.  KBE systems aim to capture a computer representation that defines both the concepts of a domain and the relationships between those concepts.

Within the knowledge base is an inference engine that extracts information from the knowledge base using various searches and reasoning techniques to find solutions, or provide a justification for its conclusions based on user or data interaction.  KBE systems provide far more power and flexibility in the development of automated and or interactive systems.  These systems are designed to allow complex rules, heuristics, artificial intelligence, and agents to be embedded in the system.  In addition, KBE systems provide more direct control over geometry and topology as well as more advanced geometry introspection capabilities necessary for this particular project. 

Tools within KBES allow for the creation of integrated environments to control content creation from various data inputs; the conversion of information into accurate geometrical models; the required database integration; the linking to existing software, physics / haptic environments, and methods to allow synchronous or asynchronous web-based collaborative working and modeling.
