Home > PC Communication > VideoChat > Setting up your Router to work with VideoChat

The kind of problems that will occur in VideoChat if your Router is incorrectly configured, include:

  • Problems with your own Router
    Unable to receive incoming calls.
Able to make an outgoing call, but the other party you connect to is unable to see or hear you.

  • Problems with the other person's Router
A long delay after you click 'yes' to accept an incoming call, and then an 'unable to connect' message.

In the event that you are experiencing these issues (or if you would just like to check that your router has been properly configured), then the following checklist will help you.  Please verify that you have clicked the HELP button on the Wizard at the relevant pages, as detailed help for many of the steps has already been provided.  However, one of the most frequent questions asked of us is how to set up Port Forwarding.

Port Forwarding
Port Forwarding is a technique which tells the Router to allow incoming traffic on a particular network 'port', and to automatically direct that traffic to your PC, so that you can receive incoming calls and establish 2-way communication with another party.

Many applications require this feature, and often a Router will arrive with its Firmware already programmed to provide a number of pre-set values for various popular software applications.  However, if VideoChat is not amongst them, then you will need to create a user-defined port-forward 'rule'.  This is typically covered in the Router's manual, or if you can contact the Router manufacturer's help desk, their engineers are very used to providing instruction on this type of setup.

However, there is an excellent web-based resource available which covers how to set up Port Forwarding on a very wide range of Routers, as well as including specific details for Buzz 3D VideoChat.  This page can be found at http://www.portforward.com.  When you arrive at the page, click the 'Forwarding' option, and then make a note of your external IP Address (this is something the Buzz 3D Network Setup Wizard will ask you to provide), and pick your Router from the list of available models.

Once you have chosen your Router, first select "Port Forwarding for (your router)", and then locate and select "Buzz 3D VideoChat" on the page that follows.  This will provide the relevant data needed to configure your device.

We also recommend that you set up a static IP Address on your LAN for the PC running the Buzz Proxy Gateway software.  Full instructions for doing this are also provided at the http://www.portforward.com website.

If you are still experiencing difficulty in following the instructions, we strongly recommend you contact your manufacturer, give them the link to http://www.portforward.com, tell them you're setting up Buzz 3D VideoChat and allow them to guide you through the necessary steps.
